Extraordinary Leadership Motivates the Best Effort in Others

There is a steady stream being composed and taught about management these days. There are pointers about management, courses about management, books, retreats, and continuing education– all focused on management. While all of this material works and can definitely boost one’s management understanding, for the most part it prevents asking and addressing two questions:

Why does better management make a difference?, and
How does better management achieve those distinctions?
All of us understand we’re “expected” to work to be better leaders, however why does it matter, what impact does it have, and how does this all work?
Whenever I ask the “Why” question, the responses that come to the mind of most people are something like “better management develops more efficiency, greater profits, lower turnover, higher task complete satisfaction, more commitment … you understand. However these actions bring us to the real question which is, “How does better management produce those things? How does being a much better leader lead to more efficiency, greater profits, lower turnover, higher task complete satisfaction, more commitment?” It is the responses to these two questions which elevate us from merely finding out and understanding better management concepts to pursuing a strategy which transforms us and our management abilities into something that really makes a difference.

I typically recommend that my customers use their own experience as their finest example. No, normally we felt the way we did (pleased, efficient, proud, focused, and devoted) because of what we did– what we achieved. The key to extraordinary management, for that reason, lies within our ability to relate effectively with individuals and their emotions.

Think of if everybody at work felt pleased, efficient, proud, focused, and devoted! What would the consequences be? The consequences would be that everybody would produce higher efficiency, greater profits, lower turnover, higher task complete satisfaction, and more commitment! The crucial then, to better performance, is helping individuals feel more pleased, efficient, proud, focused, and devoted. Notice the absence of any technical or intelligence issues? Notice that we’ve haven’t brought up the idea of “inspiring” individuals? We haven’t discussed inspiring individuals for one easy factor … individuals can’t be encouraged! Trying to encourage somebody is comparable to physically trying to get them to do something they do not want to do. You won’t be successful. Due to the fact that we want to, what really works is when we’re self-motivated– when we do something. When we’re influenced, we enjoy our work. We’re proud and efficient of our efforts. We remain focused and devoted to the task at hand. In short, we put forth out best shot.

Extraordinary management, for that reason, is management that influences individuals to give their finest effort. Extraordinary management is about relating to individuals in such a way as to influence them to give their finest effort– for themselves, their organization, their community, their household, and/or their world.

How is this achieved? The foundation of extraordinary management– of inspiring others– comprises thee locations – Effective Leadership Philosophies (on your own and your organization), Effective Purpose, Mission and Values, and Effective People Skills.

* EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES for Ontario Utah

Leading by Example – Whether we acknowledge it or not, we always lead by example. In our words (what we state or do not state), in our actions (what we do or do not do), and in our expressions (what we show or do not show). The things we do and state, throughout minutes of “evident insignificance”, make an impression on those around us.

Servant Leader Philosophies – In our management workshops, I’ll ask individuals who the most essential person is to a company. The answer, of course, is the consumer. The question that follows next is, “Who is the most essential person in the company to that consumer?”

Many people get that the person most important to the consumer is the one they can be found in contact with – the “frontline”. The question that follows is the real key to a much better understanding of servant management. This question is, “What, then, is the task of the supervisor of those frontline individuals?” The task of the managers of the frontline folks is to make their task as easy and as effective as possible so that the consumer has the very best experience possible! It ends up with an organizational chart that looks like an inverted pyramid if this management viewpoint is adopted throughout an organization. It is an organization that acknowledges the value of the frontline and reflects the viewpoint of service throughout.

* EFFECTIVE PURPOSE, MISSION AND VALUES

A company which influences the very best effort in its individuals will bring in the sort of staff members it needs and desires, and will maintain them. It has a Purpose, a Mission, and a set of Values that it lives by, it effectively interacts them, and it measures its actions and choices versus them.
Purpose is the “WHY” of the formula. It specifies why we do what we do. Each choice and policy ought to take the company
