There is a constant stream being written and taught about leadership nowadays. There are ideas about leadership, courses about leadership, books, retreats, and continuing education– all focused on leadership. Why does better leadership make a difference?, and
How does better leadership attain those distinctions?
We all understand we’re “expected” to work to be better leaders, but why does it matter, what impact does it have, and how does this all work?
Whenever I ask the “Why” concern, the responses that come to the mind of the majority of people are something like “better leadership produces more efficiency, higher earnings, lower turnover, greater task fulfillment, more commitment … you get the picture. These reactions bring us to the real concern which is, “How does better leadership produce those things? How does being a better leader result in more efficiency, higher earnings, lower turnover, greater task fulfillment, more commitment?” It is the responses to these 2 questions which elevate us from simply finding out and understanding better leadership principles to pursuing a course of action which transforms us and our leadership capabilities into something that really makes a difference.
I often suggest that my customers utilize their own experience as their finest example. Notification that we’ve haven’t raised the concept of “motivating” individuals? We haven’t touched on motivating individuals for one simple reason … individuals can’t be encouraged! Attempting to motivate someone is analogous to physically trying to get them to do something they don’t want to do. You will not succeed. What really works is when we’re self-motivated– when we do something due to the fact that we want to. When we’re inspired, we enjoy our work. We’re efficient and proud of our efforts. We remain concentrated and dedicated to the task at hand. Simply put, we put forth out best effort.
Extraordinary leadership, for that reason, is leadership that inspires individuals to give their best effort. Although, for a leader, being efficient and having good time management abilities are required and crucial, they are not enough. Having profundity becomes increasingly crucial the higher in a company we rise, however it too is inadequate for truly reliable leadership. Extraordinary leadership has to do with associating with individuals in such a way as to inspire them to give their best effort– on their own, their organization, their community, their household, and/or their world.

In our words (what we state or don’t state), in our actions (what we do or don’t do), and in our expressions (what we show or don’t show). The things we do and state, throughout moments of “apparent insignificance”, make an impression on those around us.
Servant Leader Philosophies – In our leadership workshops, I’ll ask participants who the most crucial person is to a company. The response, of course, is the consumer. The concern that follows next is, “Who is the most crucial person in the company to that consumer?”
Many people get that the person most important to the consumer is the one they can be found in contact with – the “frontline”. The concern that follows is the real key to a better understanding of servant leadership. This concern is, “What, then, is the task of the manager of those frontline individuals?” The task of the supervisors of the frontline folks is to make their task as easy and as reliable as possible so that the consumer has the very best experience possible! If this leadership approach is adopted throughout a company, it winds up with an organizational chart that appears like an inverted pyramid. It is a company that acknowledges the significance of the frontline and shows the approach of service throughout.
