There is a stable stream being written and taught about management these days. There are tips about management, courses about management, books, retreats, and continuing education– all concentrated on management. While all of this product is useful and can definitely boost one’s management knowledge, for the many part it avoids addressing and asking 2 concerns:

Why does better management make a difference?, and
How does better management attain those differences?
We all know we’re “supposed” to work to be better leaders, however why does it matter, what effect does it have, and how does this all work?
Whenever I ask the “Why” concern, the answers that concern the mind of most people are something like “better management creates more performance, greater revenues, lower turnover, higher job satisfaction, more commitment … you get the picture. But these actions bring us to the genuine concern which is, “How does better management develop those things? How does being a much better leader lead to more performance, greater revenues, lower turnover, higher job satisfaction, more commitment?” It is the answers to these 2 concerns which raise us from simply discovering and understanding better management principles to pursuing a strategy which transforms us and our management capabilities into something that truly makes a difference.

I often suggest that my customers utilize their own experience as their best example. No, typically we felt the way we did (pleased, efficient, proud, focused, and dedicated) due to the fact that of what we did– what we accomplished. The secret to remarkable management, therefore, lies within our capability to relate efficiently with people and their emotions.

The crucial then, to better performance, is assisting people feel more pleased, efficient, proud, focused, and dedicated. Notification that we’ve have not brought up the idea of “inspiring” people? We have not touched on inspiring people for one easy factor … people can’t be motivated!

Exceptional management, therefore, is management that influences people to provide their best effort. Exceptional management is about relating to people in such a way as to influence them to provide their best effort– for themselves, their organization, their neighborhood, their household, and/or their world.

How is this accomplished? The structure of remarkable management– of motivating others– comprises thee locations – Effective Leadership Philosophies (for yourself and your organization), Effective Purpose, Mission and Values, and Effective People Skills.

Leading by Example – Whether we acknowledge it or not, we always lead by example. In our words (what we say or do not say), in our actions (what we do or do not do), and in our expressions (what we reveal or do not reveal). The things we say and do, throughout minutes of “evident insignificance”, make an impression on those around us.

Servant Leader Philosophies – In our management workshops, I’ll ask participants who the most crucial person is to a company. The answer, naturally, is the consumer. The concern that follows next is, “Who is the most crucial person in the company to that consumer?”

The majority of people get that the person essential to the consumer is the one they come in contact with – the “frontline”. The concern that follows is the genuine secret to a much better understanding of servant management. This concern is, “What, then, is the job of the manager of those frontline people?” The job of the supervisors of the frontline folks is to make their job as easy and as efficient as possible so that the consumer has the best experience possible! If this management philosophy is embraced throughout an organization, it winds up with an organizational chart that appears like an inverted pyramid. It is an organization that acknowledges the importance of the frontline and shows the philosophy of service throughout.

A company which influences the best effort in its people will attract the sort of employees it requires and desires, and will retain them. It has a Purpose, a Mission, and a set of Values that it lives by, it efficiently interacts them, and it determines its actions and decisions versus them.
